The contest is over and I am proud to have placed 3rd. I might even have put myself before the 2nd placer Tim, but that's just my opinion. Sure a lot of nice termies seen this time. And nice contacts as well- I will keep an eye out for Michael's work especially.

Here are pics of the first 4 places.

I know- it's not 40k but at least it's SciFi. To be specific this is my entry for the Infinity game painting contest held over at the official Corvus Belli forum.
I just stumbled over the contest yesterday and so this isn't my best model ever. But for painting only 6 hours on it I should be satisfied.
Sorrily I dropped her with half of my lighting equipment while preparing my lightbox- so photos are crap and the model flew apart. I had to fix her arm but will not repaint the chiped off places tonight. Deadline is at 24:00 (in 50 minutes)
I will just call it a day and hope for the best.
Enjoy.

After seeing so many wonderfully painted terminators from the Space Hulk game lately on jawaballs blog and coolmini mainly, I got thinking about finishing my Grim Angels Deathwing again. And I decided that I want to do a cool and beautiful army rather than getting competitive. The reason for this is the release date for Tyranids this January and the fact that I own about 4000 points of these. They were always ment to kick ass and win best general rather than win best painted (which they did on some occasions anyway).

So coming to think what I wanted to field I chose the following because of their look. Terminator HQ with a Command Squad full of specialists and Assault Cannons (I just love the idea of six spinning barrels). A Landraider with a Terminator Assault Squad and Dreadnoughts raining from the sky with Drop Pods to stop the retreat of the enemy. The rest would be troop choices to make the list legal.
Comes out that I run critically low on troops...

What do you think - any chaince of playing this or will I end up being the punching sack of tournaments?

Seems like I made final cut. Let's see what comes out of it- tension is sure high (clicking reload on jawas website like every ten minutes).

On a sidenote I do not really paint a lot these days. It seems to be the weather or the short days because of the beginning wintertime. On top of it I am not so much into converting letalone playing 40k right now either. Currently I spend my evenings with my fiance, computergames (left 4 dead, red alert 3) or sleeping because the little ones take their well deserved time. Anyway, they are good fotostuff as well- enjoy!

I was to vienna last weekend to attend the 40k championships of the local club the "WOW/Keepers of Dice". I have a bunch of friends out there, most of them are part of the Austrian nationalteam (mostly for the European Team Championships) and they all played there. So competition was fierce. Although only 10 players attended I had a nice day of gaming and chatting about 40k tactics. I took my Dark Eldar Exodites out after two years of abstinece (but one apo game) and finished 2nd overall in the end.

As a follower of the painting corps I did not miss out on the info about the current painting challenge on dakkadakka.com. It's called Nitty Gritty Armor and the mission is to produce a well weathered tank. I am no expert in weathering although I had my try at it with pigments and spongedipping on my Dark Adeputs Mechanicus already. I think it's time to dwelve a little deeper into it and use some technices I have only read about by now. I think of oilpaints, saltmasking, using grafite and the like.

The rules
  • Paint a Tank/Skimmer/Walker/APC and make it feel/look real and used. Model must be a single tank kit. Crew additions such as drivers, commanders or riders are acceptable
  • The Deadline: November 8th, 2009: Midnight Eastern Time (GMT-5:00)
  • Take a WIP shot of your model before painting. Send your WIP along with your entry.
  • You may create a collage for the model to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.
  • Pics of your model may be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels .
  • The model you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website.
So since the model must not be shown prior to the anouncement of the winner I will not show you any pics until then. Sorry.

I have finished the work on my contest entry and just submitted it. After asking for feedback on my Release Candidate on an Austrian forum I got superb feedback- it seems I got a little snowblind during working on him. So I invested another 2 or 3 hours into the model to incorparate the ideas I was given and this is what I did:
  • I picked Sgt. Lorenzo because I like the model a lot and originally sticked to the original paint scheme. During the project I found some spots where I believe my choice of colors is better and therefore stepped of the original a little. The red tones and the method of highlighting them was one of the points. I rarely highlight red with orange or yellow. Instead I usually start with a very dark red over a black undercoat and layer up to a brigt shiny tone. I reduced the color pallete to get the focus back on the model. All gems and lenses are painted green (except for one- can you find it?). My Power Weapon fits into this scheme as well.
  • I added a base to field the model in 40k games. I do not intend to use him in Space Hulk games anymore- because I play it with Imperial Stormtroopers but I made it modular anyway.
  • The cauldron on top of the armor was replaced with a banner and I used a decal for the first time in ten years. Because I used Microsol and Microset it cones along very well. On the back I painted a freehand in NMM gold to make the backview more interesting. Another freehand can be found on the Stormbolter-again NMM gold. In the end I weathered the lower parts of the model to fuse it to his base.

I am very pleased with the outcome and would be interested in your feedback!
