Afer some month rehab after the Carnithian 40k Championships I went to a tournament again. It was held in Sterya and travel took me about 90 minutes (not counting my detours).
I took my Necron army which I painted for the release of the new codex and placed 3rd in the end. I aimed or three wins and that was exactly what I achieved. Considering the not overly compettive list (lots pf problems with 3+ let alone 2+ Infantrie) I am rather satisfied.
I faced Eldar (win), Black Templar (loose), Space Wolves (win), Necrons(loose) and Space Marines (win). My personal highlights of the tournament was when I deep struck my Monolith right behind the Wolflord on Thunderwolf mount and sucked him right into the portal. Glorious moment!

Painting score was 19 out of 30 which were not added to the tournament result. Also very okay for me since my colorscheme is rather simple (moonlight and green OSL) and conversions are rare. I took two pictures of games and will post better pics of my army later this week.

Eldar stole my initiatve blow my Mono in turn 1. From then on I was absorbing Wraithbone at an incredible rate

Necrons stole my initiative and it results in a first turn charge from Wraiths- ugh 2 Monoliths are absorbed.

Most of you think that it can work and some of you even did some testing.Veghist from Lascannons&Lances even posted his test results and underlined them with some theory of why some things cant work. He did some good work there and I suggest you visit his blog a visit.

Essentially it comes down to this. Some of the recipies are working perfectly, some to a certain degree and a lot of them (mostly the earthy tones and purples) just don't work at all.

So my tip to you is: Learn from it but don't trust it.

Ah yes, the Nomad Prowler with Spitfire. I absolutley love this model. Agreed, the gun is a little on the big side but the overall astethics are just brilliant.
I painted the head with several layers of pure white and finished it with three coats of gloss varnish to give him this Portal gun look and I am very fond of the effect. And while I was at it I added some more gloss to the floor to make the oil leaking out of the pipe believable.

Citadel color mixing: a hoax?

Yesterday I posted about the color mixing guide for Citadel colors and got an immediate response claiming this to be a hoax. After looking into my colors I realized that I do not have all base colors to begin my own tests. So I ask you:
Do you think this table works and have you already tried it? I made a poll which you can find on the right side of my blog that will be running until November and would appreciate your input on that matter. Tell me what you found out. And by the way: I may be the only one out there who loves the design of the new Necron bark. You can even see how many models it can hold! Woooo!

On the news: I won the conversion contest for september- Wohooo! Thanks to all of my readers for voting. I will give back to the community soon- stay tuned! Another post I found and think is worth checking out is this one on Nesbet Miniatures on mixing colors.
I find it very handy to know how to mix certain colors and have somewhere to look it up. Since I am afraid it might get lost in the warp I took the liberty to repost it here.

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor [part 3]

I started painting on the Inquisitor since I have to get him ready for a tournament this weekend. He still misses a base and I have to clean up some details but for only two hours of work I am rather satisfied.

I painted the white armor with a little of battle wear and contrasted with a red cloak to bring him into line with my Legio Custodes army. Details in gold and silver stay on the decent side and don't pop out. All in all he is painted to look old, experienced and rather pale with glowing eyes to mark him as a psycher. The blade is painted in quick NMM (no metalic metal) with blending from white ove blue to almost black.

Lake side clash 2011

The next 40k tournament is on the horizon and it is the Carinthian championships. I will be there with my Legio Custodes army and looking forward to having two nice days of gaming.
I used the last weeks to build a lot of terrain for our club at home while other enthusiasts did the same in the club and so I am sure we will have cool tables. Looking at the participants I see guys from Slovenia as well- which is the first time for our countries to exchange players and I am hoping to see a trend in this.

Location: The tournament is somewhat special since it is part of the "Lakeside clash" during which there is also held a big fantasy team event. I am expecting close to 70 tabletop gamers and the location looks ace. There is the possibility to sleep direlctly at the location since it is a youth hostel- lunch and barbecue will be provided just outside the gaming room. There is an indoor pool, soccer field, beachvolley field and last but not least the beach of lake "Wörthersee" which has still got nice 23° Celsius!

I am looking forward to meeting some of my fellow readers there- and maybe even place top tier.

After looking through my supplies for some time I settled on the models I wanted to use for my death cult assassins. I based my decision on the one original model GW offers us and the fact that I wanted cheap plastic.

The elven swordsmen form Lord of the rings fullfill these requirements nicely. With some conversion work they were ready to get painted.

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor [part 2]

I have finished the work on the inquisitor and show you the pictures.
I added a blade to the force weapon which I took from the High Elve Phoenix Guard. Then I sculpted a power generator to it. Other small detail was the addition of some bionic implants into his forehead.

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor [part 1]

A litte break form my Dark Eldar Project although there is still a lot of Elves in it. This is a conversion from fantasy Elves to 40k Inquisition.

I have been preparing for the carinthian 40k championships 2011 over the last weekends but not by means of getting my army ready but rather support the tournament crew with terrain pieces. Now the date is drawing closer and I need to get my army ready so I finished my thoughts on my roster two days ago and am now constructing the army. I had to decide against Dark Eldar because of the simple reason that I wont be able to complete them in time and switched back to my Legio Custodes - speak Grey Knights.

My experience with the army so far were very good (9 wins out of 11 games played) but I am growing tired of the same setup so I will put some more salt into it by replacing my trusted Librarian with an Inquisitor. Since I want to have rad grenades and Hammerhand in there he will be of the Ordo Xenos. Off to a new model!

After digging in my archieves I came up with the wonderfull Elve Mage from Mordheim which I bought ages ago- so happy with this buy now. But he lacked some carapace armor and a futuristic look. On the other hand his ears were really too pointy and I carved them down drastically. After cleaning the mold lines (running right through his face-- why oh why was GW doing this to the model?!) I temporarily glued him to a base and went for my tools- modeling time!

I decided on brown stuff for modeling hard edges since green stuff does not do this as well. I chose a xenos armor- Tau influenced in this case. I am very proud of how it turned out. The staff will be a force weapon and could pass like on like that but I think I will add a blade and some wiring. I am not sure if I will include Xenos equipment there because a weapon linked to your psyker brain and the warp should most likely be as pure as possible. Dark Eldar sponsored a venom blade (just in case I need one) and I am experimenting with pistols but have not found a suitable solution yet.

The Left 4 Infinity ruleset was released yesterday.
You can find it on Warpspider's blog, in the Infinity forums or right here as I took the liberty to paste it into here. Enjoy!

Well, we did a lot of playtesting, and here's the new (improved, tested, and already in use) set of rules. We're currently working on scenarios (like Rescue the Civilians, and so on), but the "framework" of the whole affair is now almost done. Let me (and the other guys who worked on the ruleset) know what you think of it.

Ladies, Gentlemen, Combined critters and all you genetic novelties of the Nomad Sphere,
I give to you the ruleset for "Left 4 Infinity".

The Mission

"Something has gone severely pear-shaped in a secret cloning facility. Instead of producing perfect copies, the vats have started to churn out hordes of brainless, debilitated ghouls - and the whole complex is run by a single computer, a computer that can't be shut down...

Facing one of the most severe crisis the galaxy has ever known, all of the great powers-to-be have agreed to cast their conflicts aside to counter this threat. A team of mission specialists has been assembled to salvage what still can be saved.

But will their efforts be enough?"

"Left 4 Infinity" is a cooperative scenario for 2 to X players, with one player taking the mantle of "Zombie Overlord", trying to prevent the other players ("The Specialists") from reaching their mission objective and escaping the zombie-ridden city.

The Specialists

The team of mission specialists consists of 1 to X players. Each player can play with the following miniatures:

1-3 Line (or) Garrison troops or
1 other miniature of any faction. (Antipodes, Bakunin Uberfallkommando etc. count as 1 model for the purpose of assembling the Specialists).

Special Rules & Skills
Every miniature in the team, with the exception of TAGs, Pupniks, Antipodes, etc) have access to the following special rules and equipment:

Booty (only to loot fallen team members, no extra equipment, Zombies are not lootable)
Auto-Medikit (1 use, model can heal itself)
Paramedic
Engineer
Irregular
Religious Troop

Orders
Every team member has 2 Orders.

Lieutenant
The team declares a Lieutenant, who automatically receives the Skill Strategos Lvl 01. Antipodes, Pupniks or Remotes are not eligible to be promoted to Lieutenant.

The Lieutenant chooses the deployment zone and sets the sequence in which the members of the team get active. The Lieutenant Order can be transferred to any other model on the table.

Setting up the table

The table is set up like any ordinary Infinity table, with lots of terrain and LOS blocking. The size of the table should be around 48" x 48".

The Zombie player places a number of mission objectives and sewer entrances on the table. The number of each is: half the number of miniatures on the Specialists' team, rounding down (so 1 objective for 3 miniatures, or 3 objectives for 7 miniatures, and so on). Mission objectives and Sewer entranced are placed

10" from the board's edges AND
8" from each other

The Specialists' Lieutenant then chooses the deployment zone, which measures 3" from a board edge of his choice. Infiltrators may be deployed up to 6" deep, and can infiltrate as usual. The rules for Hidden Deployment are no longer in effect. Treat Hidden Deployment just like Combat Drop. Models with Mechanized Deployment are deployed like Infiltrators.

Deploying the Undead Horde

The Zombie player starts with the Zombie Lieutenant and some Zombies, amounting to double the number of the Specialists' miniatures (and Camo markers) on the table. After the Specialist have deployed, the Zombie player sets up his miniatures, with no limitations, except for keeping a minimum distance of 12" to the Specialists.

Zombie Reinforcements
Every turn, starting from the first, the Zombie player receives Reserves. These Reserves can be "bought" out of a certain budget that is determined by the following way:

2D6/2 (rounding up) + points for every Specialist miniature/Camo marker on the table

Miniatures on the table generate Reserve budget according to their point cost as follows:

1 - 20 pts = 1 Reserve point
21-40 pts = 2 Reserve points
41-60 pts = 3 Reserve points (and so on, working up in steps of 20 points)

as well as 1 Reserve point for every full SWC used.

Example:
The Specialists' team consists of a Fusilier with HMG, a Sin Eater Observant with Mk12, a Wu Ming with Boarding Shotgun and a Domaro Butai with Boarding Shotgun. This would give the Zombie Player the following number of Reserve points to use per turn:

Fusilier (HMG) costs 19 pts + 1 SWC = 2 Reserve points
Sin Eater Observant costs 29pts = 2 Reserve points
Wu Ming and the Domaru Butai cost 36pts each, conferring 2 x 3 Reserve points

This means that the Zombie player has 10 + 2D6/2 Reserve points, allowing him to spend between 11 and 16 Reserve points per turn.

After choosing his Reserves, the Zombie player consults a D20 to ascertain how many Zombies he may deploy on a table edge or sewer entrance (always rounding up).

1-5: the Zombie player may deploy 25% of his Zombies
6-10: the Zombie player may deploy 50% of his Zombies
11-15: the Zombie player may deploy 75% of his Zombies
16-20: the Zombie player may deploy all of his Zombies

Elite Zombies and Zombie Dogs are, if the D20 roll permits, to be deployed by the Zombie player.

All the Zombies that may not be deployed by the Zombie player are then deployed by the Specialists’ team players.

Every sewer entrance can only hold 3 Zombies and 1 Elite Zombie. Zombie Dogs and Tanks may not be deployed via a sewer entrance.

Unique Zombies
Lurker, Hunter, Spitter, Sticky, Boomer, and Tank are unique. This means that there can never be more than 1 unique Zombie of the same type on the table (Example: 2 Boomers are not permitted at the same time, a Boomer and a Hunter are perfectly fine).

If a unique zombie is taken out of action, it cannot be chosen as a Reinforcement in the following turn – it has to „wait“ for a full turn before it can be brought to the table again.

Bringing the Zombies to the table
At the beginning of his turn, the Zombie player must bring his Reserves to the table using their Impetous order. The Reserves must have base contact with the table edge after carrying out the Impetous order.

This happens before the Impetous orders of the Zombies already on the table are carried out.

The Specialists’ Objectives

The Specialist’s objective is to obtain the mission objective(s) and carry it (or them) off the table.

About the Mission Objectives
The Mission Objectives have to be „opened“ before they can be carried off-table. Hackers can choose to hack the mission objective, non-Hackers have to get into base contact and spend a short movement order to make a WiP test and „open“ the objective.

To pick up the mission objective, a model has to move into base contact and spend a short movement order to pick it up (place a mission objective marker in base contact with the model that picked it up).

Zombies, Antipodes, Remotes and TAGs can neither open or pick up mission objectives.

Once a mission objective is picked up, an exfiltration zone is opened on the table edge that is the farthest away from the mission objective, measuring 3" from the center of this table edge. The Specialists must exit the table via the exfiltration zone in order to succeed.

Carrying the mission objective
Every mission objective marker is considered to be „non-existent“ as far as LOS, etc. are concerned.

The mission objective slows its carrier down, which means that a model carrying the mission objective may not combine a Move order with another Move order, but still with other short movement like Climb or Jump. (Example: A model with MOV 4-4 can only move 4" per Order spent, but can still move 4" and climb a fence, and so on).

Any model carrying the mission objective may not use Braces or the like to let itself carry by another model.

The model carrying the mission objective can pass it on to another model in base contact by spending a short movement order. As usual, Zombies, Antipodes, TAGs or Remotes cannot carry the objective.

If for any reason the model carrying the mission objective is taken out of action (or turned into a Zombie), it immediately drops the objective. The mission objective can then be picked up by any other model just as described above.

If the carrier is rendered unconscious, the mission objective stays in its possession (so it doesn't need to spend another short movement order to pick the objective up again, if the model is conscious again). If another Specialist moves into base contact with the unconscious model, it can spend a short movement order to pick up the mission objective.

Profiles & Point Costs for Zombies

Special Rules
No Coup de Gracê: The model cannot execute a Coup de Gracê.
Zombie Epidemic: If a model is killed in CC by a Zombie, the model is transformed into a Zombie that can only carry out AROs until the next turn of the Zombie player. In the Zombie player's next turn, the model is replaced with a standard Zombie.

If a model is rendered unconscious by a Zombie in CC, it has to succeed on a PH test every Specialist turn in which the Auto-Medikit cannot be used or turn into a Zombie. The same applies if the Auto-Medikit test is failed.

Weak Flesh: Some models have a negative ARM value that is added to a weapon's strength instead of being deducted.

For example, a model with Weak Flesh and ARM -2 is hit by a weapon with STR 13. The ARM roll has to be made against a value of 15 (13 + 2), with all other modifiers (like cover, range, etc) applied as usual.

AP CCWs double the ARM modifier - to use aforementioned example, the roll has to be made against a value of 17 (STR 13 + 2x2). Monafilament CCWs allow no ARM roll at all.

ETC 2011 - recap

Men we got our selves some beatings! It was fun most of the times anyhow I must admit and I had two intesive days of gaming, discussing and spending tons of swiss cash. I also managed to meet some guys which I only knew from the internet yet and it is always fun to connect those two realms.

My Grey Knights fared very wll and I won 5 of my 6 games but there is no I in TEAM.

Left 4 Infinity

Some guys in the club came up with the idea to combine the computergame Left 4 Dead with the tabletop Infinity. Out came Left 4 Infinity!
This week I was part of a test game and I have to say that this thing has potential! I was having so much fun with the game that I even made up a banner. The parts for it are taken from various origins without permision- (one of them being a backgroudn joke of a webcomic I lost track of)- thanks to the contributers-whoever you are!

The first wracks are painted. The models, bases and the colorsheme for them worked really well. I will paint the rest of them now and then go on with their transport.
I used a jungle / swamp theme for their bases. If you take a close look you might notice that their feet are below the watersurface. The base was custom made by me (Full resin base hollowed out with dremel and casted afterwards. I created the water with vallejo still water effects and experimented with green paints in them.

Progress on my Razorwing. Doesn't look like much but I had a hard time deciding how to paint the wings but I am finally happy.
I created a hexagonal design which resembles the flickerfield. Enjoy!

After half a year I continued the work on the Razorwing. Reason for the break was mainly a failed paint attempt and a broken airbrush which caused the fail in the first place.

Anyhow- with the colorsheme picked I tried to stick to it for now and have done the basic work. I am not satisfied yet with the overall appearance but am uncertain as how to continue.

Infinity game impressions

I had another game of infinity yesterday and it was really funny. It was a two on two tagteam match between YuJing and Ariadna with secret mission objectives and we won!
Our side was 5 Japanese and 5 Chinese trying to map their deployment area and eliminate their Ltn. They had some Zouaves and Tankhunters who tried to get our cubes and prevent us from reaching their deployment zone.

Agram Arena Tournament report

So I made it and got my Legio Custodes tournament ready in time (3:30 AM to be precise) for the UMS Agram 2011 (Zagreb/Croatia) tournament. So I got up at 6:00 Am again, drove 250km to the south crossing slovenia by traveling there and got me two days with fellow hobby friends form abroad.

The tournament went okay for me. Normally it goes very well but thanks to lack of sleep I made a lot of mistakes in my third game and hence lost it. Since I won all my other 4 games this cost me the 2nd place in the end but I still places 3rd overall which was satisfying enough. I love this tournament because of the atmosphere there and will certanly pay them a visit again.

I took nearly no photos since I am not too proud of the army yet and was very tired as well- so just three impressions.

Current status of my Legio Custoes: the army consists of 1750 pts painted to a poor level and I will surely invest some more time. I plan to pin every model oto their resin bases, rework those, drill some bolter holes, paint goldn details- add some OSL,...

After the conversion work is done mostly (some greenstuff here and there need to be done still) I started painting. I decided to do the vehicles first since the infantry still needs finishing touches modelwise.
I undercoated black and applied a cenital Highlight with gunmetal out of the can afterwards. I am still waiting for my masking tape to arrive before I can go into detail with the airbrush so next will be the same process for the dreadnoughts.

As I only own Rhinos and no Razorbacks I had to come up with an idea for a replacement. I tried the mini-turret from Oldcrow models but sadly it was too small - although very cool. So I took a look at the sprues I had lying around and found the Dreadnought missile launcher.
Since I dicided to go for Autocannons for both arms I had no real use for it and started converting it to be the prototype of my razorback turret. I added a lot of plasticard to close the rear side and give it an even surface. The I dug out the Heavy Bolter form the Master of the Ravenwing kit and chopped it so it would fit.
Then make a mold, pour resin in- fail, rework the mold, pour resin in-fail...repeat like 5 times and I got my first cast that I can work with.

Custom Dreadnought arm/shoulder

As I do not own Dreadnought arms with autocannons but wanted to field them, I needed a solution. An affordable solution- say without Forgeworld stamp on it. At first I thought about using Cadian weapon teams or Aegis defense line systems but all of them had one flaw...a lot of work and still not half cheap.

The solution presented itself when a friend hinted me towards the gun barrels offered by a company named Oldcrow models. They offer high quality tin barrels for a very fair price and shipping is reasonable as well.

The rest is constructing my own shoulder pads and cast them. My design of the prototype lets me use it for both arms and also for all sort of weapons although it is primarily meant for autocannons. It has no ammodrums or such things which would need to be added later on but this also gives me the possibility to create convincing variations by adding powercells, ammodrums or additional armor.

I decided I wanted to be able to field three Dreadnoughts with my Legio Custodes. On the other hand I was not too happy about spending a fortune on new plastic so I went for an in between aproach.
I am lucky enough to have friends who own about as many models, bits and spareparts for 40k as I do and so one of them offered me to sell me two of his Black Reach Dreadnoughts for a fair price. I gladly accepted and decided to buy one Venerable Dreadnought kit to get the bits for pimping them. The heads are form the Blood Angels Sanguine Guard and a little bit of greenstuff (and a lot of hacking) cut the deal. Et voila: Three Legio Custodes Dreadnoughts. For the arms I have special plans.

Praetorian Prototype

This is the start of my army project of 1750 points of Legio Custodes. I will play them with the Grey Knights codex and plan to have finished them by 16.th of july this year. That leaves me 20 days- totally doable I think.

Starting with the picture below of the only ever realesed Legio Custodes miniature I began my armyproject. Here are my prototpyes for the Praetorians and the bolter-halberds.

Update: As requested I added a picture to show the size of the Praetorian next to a Space Marine.

The WuMing the so called "nameless" are criminals pushed into service by the YuJing government. They are heavy infantry usually sent into situations with high casualities expected.

The model uses a boarding shotgun and is the main reason why I started with YuJing at all. This is how a power armor should look like in my oppionion.

I painted a model for my sectorial army of Nippon. Simply put the Domaru Butai are samurais in power armor.
They are an elite choice and their basic ranged weapon is a chainrifle which supports their closecombat oriented nature. They get really nasty when they get up and personal though with special rules like "frenzy" and explosive close combat weapons. In the sectrorial list they have the option to become the ltn. at no additional costs (SWC).

And here we go with another Infinity model. The Celestial Guard with Combirifle, underslung light grenade launcher and Kuang Shi control device (remote detonator).

It's a girl if you didn't notice her breasts, hair and naked bellyalready - Yay for Manga. Better pictures to follow (again- I know) but I added a group shot of what I have so far as well- and it's getting playable already. So exciting! :)

I have painted another Infinity model for my skirmish group. And it is another Celestial guard with combirifle stalking the wastelands of an unknown planet.

Infinty excurs. A lot of people at my local gaming club jumped the bandwagon and decided to start with Infinity (form Corvus Belli) after seeing the Beats of War Infinity week special. For me this is the perfect excuse to continue my Yu Jing army.

I picked the Celestial Guard model since I plan to use him as my lieutenant and he looked easy enough to paint. After having a discussion with a friend of min who really has a lot of experience I decided to listen to him and use his suggested approach on this mini.

Primed black and then a short burst of white primer to get directions for lighting.

The greentones are applied. I started with a thin basecoat of my middle tone, applied it 4 about 5 times and then went on with the shadows. I added black to the mix and added more water making it a glaze. I used about 6 layers in the shadows and then went on to the highlights. I added skincolor to my basecoat color and again watered it down so I could use it as a glaze. Another 6 layers and then hard highlights with pure skincolor.

The red tones are finished. I used the same procedure as for green but used the green shadow glaze for toning down rather than a dark red. The highlights involve yellow and again the skintone.

All greys parts are done its getting along rather nice. The head became more of a white but I figured thats okay because he will be my lieutenant and can stand out a little

All grey areas are basecoated with the blueish grey and then washed 6 times with badab black. I think the basecoat was too bright and will change this on future models.

The painted model without the basing. It took me 3,5 hours to achieve this and I am proud of my work. I will update with the finished model when it is dry. The last step inclded clear (gloss)varnishing him since he is ment for play- basing and after that sealing it with a matt varnish.

Grim Angels Scouts [wip part 2]

Continuing the work on my first scout unit. Base colors are applied over a primer of Armypainter Bone Spray. The eyes are already detailed although I am not 100% satisfied. Maybe I will go over them again.

The lighting is better- I am still experimenting with my light and camera set which sits next to my PC so it gets online fast.

Grim Angels Scouts [wip part 1]

I started work on the first scout unit for my Grim Angels Space Marine Army. I bought the models second hand on the internet and beheaded them to put on helmets since I really can't stand the way GW modeled their faces.

The helmets are Chaos Space Marine helmets form which I removed the horns and all other pointy Chaos Symbols. The power armored marines will feature standard helmets of imperial design so that the scouts still pop out immediatly. While removing the flesh from the models I realized that the scout sprue is definitely not the best around. They seem to be produced too cheaply since the bottom of the shoulderpads on some models has no hard edges but ruther a buldge.

The only other modification is that I magnetized the sergeants right arm so that I can switch for combi weapons when playtesting shows he needs more firepower. The powerfist is glued on though because I am not leaving home without it.

The lighting is catastrophic- I apologize and plight improvement

The project goes on slowly but steadily. I force myself to stay at it and to not wander off into other directions although the urge his huge.
As you an see in the pictures all areas are shaded and hilighting is almost done. I already started with the details (battledamage is minimal this time) and the end is drawing near. To this point I am really satisfied with the looks of it but also a little sad as I know that a lot of areas I put attention to will be covered by the crew later on.

Salzburger Schlachthaus 2011 [part 3]

Welcome to part 3 of my tournament report. The first three matches lead me into the finals and I was looking forward to the match afterall it was cleat that I would meet selfproclaimed Mr.40k Austria himself on the field of battle.

After counting two and tow together it became obvious that the near draw in match tow had cost me the lead and that meant I had to win this game. Worse still Fabian was fielding his Guard army which was designed to sit back and shoot everything foolish enough to step out into the open. On top pf that came the fact that I painted his army on comission (yome might remember these posts)so I couldn't even hope to win the torunament with the painting score. Darn- this meant either play for draw which was totally possible the way the mission was designed or get up close and personal and let the powerfists do the talking. I went for option two (who would have guessed?).

Fourth match against Imperial Guard.

Mission: Take center of table (12" diameter)
First turn: HIM

The table was a city fight terran with a lot of sight blockers wich was good and bad for me at the same time. On the one side, I could approach with myterminators easily to get the tanks into close combat. On the other side I wouldn't be able to get easy shots at his artillery and at short range I was seriously outgunned.As lucky as I was in the previous games- this time I would not start the battle and so I prepared to dodge a lot of bullets and so I started with a little prayer to the agry emperor.

It was dawn of war deployment and he set up vrey broad over his edge keeping the infantry at the center flanked by Vendettas on the one side and Hyras on the other. I decided to focus on one corner and bring everything on from there to reduce his firepower with firing angels and picked the left corner.

Since it was still nightfight I only spotted one Vendetta and could only shake it and after that things got ugly. Long story short: In his second turn the sun rises and all his guns open fire. I loose many of my terminators, one Land speeder and my predators get stunned. At least my terminators pass their saves and charge headstrong (Templar rules). Again I cannot overlook the advantage infantry has over vehicles when it comes to survivability when I finally return fire it is only the cyclones and the lascannons of the paladins that do any damage because everything else is asleep. I kill one Hydra, down a Vendetta, destroy the launcher of one Manticore- laughable.

By now I know that my only way to defeat him will be to get into close combat fast and that it will take a serious beating to get there. I boost my last surviving speeder into his deployment zone for some distraction and continue my approach with the heavy infantry while my paladins exchange shots with his tanks. Another weakpoint of the Templar codex is revealed when his psychic korps starts their witchcraft. I test after even loosing a single model and on leadership thats some roll- ouch.

In turn five I make it into the center of his army and start killing stuff efectively but as always with guard you kill 20- 20 more show up! It is getting close when he runs out of troop choices and I run away from his psykers. As the game ends in turn five I cannot even benefit from the "and they shall know no fear rule" and give up points for the full terminator unit because they are still fleeing. As I always try to play on the safe side, I have still got a unit contesting the area but with a draw on the objective and the losses I suffer the game ends with a maginal victory for the Imperial Guard.

It was a game in good spirit and I had a lot of fun thanks to Fabian who is alwyas trying to cover up his sneaky cheat ambitions with a lot of humor and doens't take it badly when caught. ;)

Result: 9:11

I choose the side with less dakka for entering the frey and am hoping for some lucky shots in turn 1

After trading one round of blows I already miss 4 terminators one speeder and the other speeders cyclone launcher.

The weapon destroyed speeder rushes forward to flank the guard army and starts a Heavy Bolter duel with a manticore (also suffering weapon destroyed) and looses it after three turns :(

6 Terminators survive the shooting and finally clash into the Guard army tearing down the command squad first (try to find the Army commander in the picture)

Then they batter into the center of the table exploding to more Chimeras and charging the passengers. Riddik seizes initiative and also charges in.

The veterans prove their worth when they unload an unholy amount of lasfire into the terminators and spare their Melta shots for Riddik (never to be seen again that day). The paladins do their best but can only save the draw.. that makes them angry.

At the end of the line I can say that I really had a pleasant day and congratulate Fabian to his well deserved 1st place. I myself went home with 3rd overall and new friends. I hope to go there again next year or even sooner. Enjoy the video I took in the evening hours which shows the ambiente really well!

The second part of the tournament report with my next two games which brought me into the finals. The last part will follow and includes a video but for now on to the heretics.

Second match against Sisters of Battle.

Mission: Take five Objectives
First turn: ME

He decides to stay in reserve and so I advance to take controle of the battle field. When he arrives in his turn 2 he does so in managable force and my firepower proves to be fatal for sisters. The match goes on with me destroing everything that gets in sight and only suffer minor losses in return. One of these "minor" losses is my tactical squad which is assaulted and put to the (holy) blade by the canoness which should cost me dearly later on.
In turn five I place my two surviving tacticals on mission objectives after having reduced the enemy army to about 10 sisters and 3 tanks. In his turn he shows his genious when getting a lonely sister back into the fight with an act of faith and putting her on an uncotested marker. Another 5 Celestians melta down two Paladins on another objective who in turn decide to go home and so it is a draw concerning mission objectives. As the game ends right then his good spirit is awarded with a draw by objectives and only the brutal losses on his side turns it into a minor victory for the Angry Marines.

It was a fungame mainly because my opponent didn't take my dice rolling personaly and kept on challenging me until the end. Turns out he is part of the Irish ETC team and we may yet meet each other in Switzerland this year.

By the time the first sisters aproach all units are in place and ready to open fire.

Riddick and two terminator squads have already crossed the table and are in assault range.

So they decide to arrive form the corners and get blown up the second they do. Survivors are stubborn though and refuse to retreat.

They keep pushing on and by sheer numbers manage to get to one of the objectives held by my Marines- who they slaughter after blowing up their transport.

This is how close I was to even loose the game in the end when the few meltas that were still alive put some love on my scoring units.

Mission: Killpoints
First turn: HIM (but I steal initiative)

He is really believing in going first and deploys according to it. With my huge experience against double lash I decide to set up in one corner on maximum distance but also in a way to profit from first turn if I would gain inititiave. My Landspeeders are reserved to get killing shots on his princes if he manages to hide from my main army. Then I really do steal inititaitve and everything goes acording to plan. I focus on killing the princes fast and accomplish this by turn two while staying out of lash and Plasma cannon range with my terminators at the same time.
He has moved his Nurgle Rhinos ahead of his princes to deny me the shooting on them which makes it necessary to sacrify my speeders to get the job done. Then I strand the Plaguemarines in front of my base when I kill his Rhinos (although it takes me the wohle shooting of my army for one turn thanks to failed leadership tests on my side). Since they hide in a big ruin terrain I decide to accept the Plasmafire form the Obliterators and charge in. Maybe this move was too bold because the losses are bad but at least I manage to kill the Plaguemarines after that.

The rest of the game sees him suffering badly from the unability to kill anything while I go for the last surviving Obliterators. Seizing inititiave really helped but I think that it wouldn't have ended any different anyway.

Result: 18:2

Salzburger Schlachthaus 2011 [part 1]

Schlachthaus means Slaughter house in English in case you were wondering and when thinking of a 40k tournament this even made sense in a way. Four games at 1750 points with 40 paticipants promised a nice day and so I took my Angry Marines from the shelf once more. After all the Black Templar FAQ demands for (angry) playtesting.

Salzburg is about 150 km from where I live and so I got up at 5:30 AM to travel there by car. A friend of mine was going too and so I picked him up and we arrived on time without a problem. The organizers had everything under control (most of the time) although it was their first event and I had a very nice day.

My army:

1x Emperor's Champion (Riddick hates everything)
3x Tankhunter Terminotrs with two Cylone Launchers and one Chainfist
3x Tactical Marines with Plasmagun and Lasercannon (two of them in Rhinos)
2x Landspeeder Typhoon
2x Predator Destructor with Lascannon sponsons

First match against Space Wolves.
1x Lord on Thunderwolve with Frostblade, Stormshield and Runic Armor
5x Grey Hunters in Razorbacks with one Wolfguard each
1x Wolfscouts with Wolfguard
3x Landspeeder with Multimelta

Mission: Take three Objectives
First turn: ME

He is set up in cover and I advance just a little bit to put preassure on him early and force him to come towards me. This works well but I am a little too close and when he gets lucky on his run roll for the Lord one of my terminator squads bites the dust on turn 1. Ouch.
I retalliate by shooting the though guy down but it takes the firepower of my whole army (note to myself: Reconstruct army to compensate). A lot of shooting is wasted when my squads including terminators deicde to shoot closest targets instead of primary threats. I really felt the need to get a Marshall here. I dictate the game form there on by concentrating fire on one flank and ignore the other one. So the match goes on as he feeds me one squad after the other and by turn four I decide to go for tabling him to grab all possible points.
I achieve this in the end but the loss of the terminator squad is too much for a massaker result.

Result: 19:1

Predators to the end of my board ready to advance forward before the Wolfscouts arrive

Last voice record form Terminator squad 1: "Hey pal! Does this look like more than 18" away for you?"

Wolflord is afraid of Riddick and decides to go left- making Riddick all the more angry...

...so he kicks is squads in the ass and assaults "...DIE f****g Rhino b***h- DIE!"

The center is assaulted by one brave (insane heroism anyone?) Razorquad...

...which after Plasmashooting the hell out of my terminators is repelled by firepower. Predators advance and Land Speeders prepare to shoot the Wolfscouts in case they try to show up in my rear.

Wich they don't. They rather try to stop Riddick's Killing spree. At that point he has killed of one Greyhunter squad and forced another one to retreat.

There they are just seconds before Riddick goes through them like a knife through hot butter.

On the other flank the terminators advance to the opposing border to get the last of the surviving troops.

That must have been the point when the Greyhunters decided to let go and accept defeat by frag missile (who needs armorsaves anyway?)

The last action of the games sees his last surviving Wolfguard being charged by Riddick. I did forgoe shooting him in order to calm Riddick a little.

Land speeder storm [WIP]

The Land Speeder Storm must be about the most complex model you can get from GW these days. I have a lot of experience with GW Kits and although I have not built all of their models, I can not imagine that you get so much for your money in another of their products.

I built it to specs with all the care I could spare and must say that I am impressed. You do not only get the speeder itself- which has alot of detail on it's own (cockpit, spare weapons on the walls,...), you also get the crew and four passengers. I have even seen people build the four scouts in the back in a way that they can even be used in games as standalone models. I didn't do that since I think with the exception of two models it requires a lot of remodeling to get that done convicing.

For now I took my time to paint all the scouts separately to get them to a top notch standard. Pictures of them will follow later but for now I have started painting the skimmer. Five layers of bleached bone if you are interested- phew(not counting the primer and washes)

Next steps is the red basecolor and then the shading starts.

Vehicle Destroyed – Explodes (Crater) done

Of course I am long done with these craters I talked about in an earlier post but I almost forgot to show the pictures of the completed terrain pieces. So here you go

As you can see I (and my three year old son) painted them and added some static grass as some of you fellow readers suggested. I really like the look of them and they became handy on my last tournament already. I handed over four of them to a friend carefully packed in a ziploc freezer storage bag- thanks for the tip goes to sonsoftaurus.

(Space Hulk) Grim Angels Space Marine Librarian [PIP]

A little update on what I paint these days.- namely a Librarian in Terminator armor.(converted from the Space Hulk game)
One of my goals for 2011 is to paint up my Grim Angels Space Marine Chapter. This army is not intended to win tournaments-the asskicking will be done by my Angry Marines- but rather aim for best painted awards. The other will be to have a Dark Eldar Coven Army bt that's another story.

Back to the painting in progress [PIP]. The guy is relatively finished but I have not decided on the type of bases I will be using- so here he stands on the plain floor he has right now. As most of my PIP pictures these are take with my iPhone and whatever lightsource there is avaiable so quality is not the best.
Constant readers of my blog will see the new style that strongly contrasts to what I normaly do. Reason is that most paint judges are strongly influenced by what GW tells them is cool and proper and alot of my other armies were therefor disregarded for using weathering techniques a lot. I will prove that I can do other styles as good with this army and hopefully get rewarded for it by placing best painted army two or three times this year.

So here goes my cartoony fluff colored Librarian- Blue with his right shoudler pad in Chapter colors (red with with winged sword). The base color is darkened in the shadows and brightened up in the lighter areas. Battle damage is minimal and painted onto the basecolor rather than using a mask on a rustlayer underneath. Highlights are rather strong (for my liking) and finally a little OSL from the force weapon. Conversion work is kept to a minimum by replacing his Storm Bolter for a Storm shield (mganetized the arm) and turning the Dark Angels Shoulder and Shield with greenstuff for my chapter and Librarian.

WOW-Keepers Neujahrsdoppel 2011 - Report

All games are played and another fun event is behind me. As oposed to my earlier post, I did not field my Templars but decided to use the opportunity to play the Dark Adeptus Mechanicus!
What a joy it was to finally get the approval of a tournament host since I never had the chance to play them before. My list was restricted to the models I have so it wasn't really competitive:

- 1 x Chaos sorcerer with the Mark of Slaanesh and Lash of Submission
- 1 x Greater Daemon
- 1 x Dreadnought with two DCCW and a Heavy Flamer
- 2 x Five Plaguemarines with two plasmaguns and Champion with Powerfist
- 2 x Defiler with two DDCWs each

My friend had to compensate so he went for a Firepower Imperial Guard list with a big block(tarpit) of Infantry to hold objectives.

- 1 x HQ with 3 Meltaguns and a Com
- 1 x Infantry Platoon Command with four flamers
- 3 x Infantrie squads with Autocannon, (one Commisar and one Com)
- 1 x Veterans with 3 Meltaguns
- 2 x Vendetta
- 1 x Leman Russ Executioner

So I got up at 5:00 AM and drove 3,5 hours to Vienna by car only to be welcomed by cold and windy weather and 14 other teams!

First game against a team of Imperial Guard and Orks- 2 Hydras, 130 Guards (with some antitank) and 120 Boys and one Bigmek to be specific. Now that looked to be fun. They were rather fast in deployment though and thereby made some mistakes. The first one was to set up a 50 man tarpit without a commisar right at their tableedge. The LemanRuss punished them by putting 32 wounds on them which made them flee of the table in round 2. The other big mistake was to setup the big mek in the first row- so I could easily lash him to my greater daemon on turn him into pulp. The rest of the game saw us charging the orkmobs with defilers and dreadnoughts and tear through them in a bloody mess. The result was closer than we thought after we destroyed 100 boys, the tanks and about 70 Guards but still we won.

Second game was against an unholy alliance of Space wolves and Chaosmarines. These were some nice armies and we had a lot of fun with our shootout. They took the initiative by droping a dread and Wolfguard Terminators in Pods asap followed by a Plague Rhino as well as a daemon prince at our frontlines while flanking with their wolfscouts. But in the end all attacks were repelled and it was a close win for us. The Lash sorcerer played his magic tricks well staying just outside the range of the Runepriest Blocking Staff and even struck down the Daemonprince in self defence but finally died to a perils of the warp attack late game. (So is the price of Chaos)

Ambushing a Vendetta- now that shows some insane herosim (Spacewolves-eh)

Last game we played against a shooty mix of Imperial Guard and Bloodangels. I think I counted 17 Lasercannons so we were seriously outgunned. It made no sense to setup our armour so we only placed the tarpit and 5 Plague marines to deny them the scout moves of their threee Vendettas. The rest came in form reserves- to our delight (sarcasm here) one after the other so that they could be destroyed piecemeal. A very tough game and we had to pull off every trick and use ever inch but we (with a fair amount of luck on our side) managed to draw the game in the end. Not bad for bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Lowight of the tournament was the painting competition. I planed to win it in the first place since my army is totally converted and painted to a very high tabletopstandard but it seems someone had a problem with the techniques I used.

It is true that it looks dirty and unlcean but that's on purpose- the army is a Fallen Mechanicus totally corrupted by chaos- scavenging Necron parts using possession and badly maintenanced. I used sponge dibbing, pigments, washes- so heavy weathering all over and the result is (in my oppinion) very convincing. All the more surpised I was to learn that it not even made final cut denying me the chance to be voted on by the players for best painted army. Also the paintjudge did not give me any answer to why I din not place when I asked him. Very dissapointing and also annoying to see that two armies painted by him were nominated... I made pictures with my iPhone so you can judge for yourself- the red Chaos army won best painted by the way.

Yellow can be a hard color to paint if you take the wrong aproach.

The yellow coat was to thick and the bases to plain for me to win best painted after all.

This army got my vote. Although the highlights are very subtle- the detailconversions are nice.

Scouts with helmets- much better than the stumpy head. I do this for my models too.

Cool OSL but again the tanks cannot hold up to the standard the infantry sets.

Alltogether just not enough to get my vote.

One of the better nominated armies- clear highlights but a little frosting from the varnish lets it down.

This army won best painted. In my opinion the tanks lower the score dramatically since they are really plain.

A lot of Fantasy Chaos bits went in there.

Black Templar FAQ

So Games Workshop published a FAQ for my beloved Black Templars (speak Angry Marines) which allows them to use all the wonderful rules the Spacemarine equipment has...Small image taken form MrChaos of Chaos Brushes

This cries out Cyclone Missile Launchers and Stormshields on a first glance. The really good (or bad if you are on the receiver end of the barrel) news is that all other things were unchanged. Namely the point costs and restrictions. So it s totally possible to have five terminators with two tankhnter missilie launchers and the Landspeeder Typhoon only costs 70 points. Yes- this spells Missilie Spam and I am not too proud to go that way. After all my Marines are angry all the time (always).

On a sidenote I also get the new Machine Spirit, Smoke launchers while keeping my old Droppod (go figure)

Driving around WW2 tanks in arcade stile while having your friends in your squad with all the hectic radio chatter- pure fun!

A double torunament is coming up and I will be there. I do this about one time per year and choose carefully because too often the house rules really mess it up.
This time everything looks good as the organizers restricted the players of each team to spare one AOP meaning only 2 HQ, 3 ELITE, 6 TROOP, 3 FAST ATTACK and 3 HEAVY SUPPORt slots for the whole team.
Armyrosters are still in the planing stage but we have a picture of where we want to go. It will be Black Templars and Blood Angels- I see a wonderful backgroundstory evolving with shared heraldry and stuff and I see this as a chance to have three fungames as it is a rare possibility to play 40k together with your best friend.

Dark Eldar Razorwing painting [01]

I started work on the paintjob of my Razor Wing. It will become the colorsheme I decided on earlier this month and will feature OSL and weathering effects.

So I started with the cockpit since this part has to be painted before glueing it all together. Here the first OSL is shown and I am satisfied although there is- as always room for improvement.

Dark Eldar Razorwing Tutorial

After taking my time to let some of the approaches out there inspire me I finally began work on my own Razorwing.

Games-Workshop decided to give most of the Dark Eldar units new german names instead of translating or keeping the english versions. So they called the Razorwing "Sichelflügel-Jäger" which translates to "Sicklewing-Fighter". (If you are interested of what else they came up with follow this link). That name is one of the reasons for my design approach as I was pleased with the idea of wings that look like a sickle. I knew that I wanted to make use of the Eldar Fireprism turret simply because it is a perfect start as a cockpit and after some discussions with friends I decided to build the rest of the plane form scratch. So with a clear vision in my head I started work.

What you need: Fireprism turret sprue, Dark Eldar weaponary and some spikey bits were taken from two raider kits, styrne (1mm thick), Epoxy putty, Missile racks from a Lanspeeder Typhoon launcher (can be done with tooth picks as well)

Drawing the outlines of the wingdesing on the styrene with a pencil- this is also my sketching as you can see.

Here I cut out the first wing and refined it until it fitted my perception.

The second wing was simply a reproduction of the first one.

I took the hatch door of the Fire prism kit and cut out the energy cores and by glueing them on the lower side of the wings created my weapon mounts. Also notice the small parts of sprue that I used to create the link with the fireprism cockpit.

I used one of the star engines as a single-turbine- two were just too dominant. I also took one of the Nightspinner gun covers as an air inlet.

I had to carve the engine quite a bit to make it fit in and as you can see there are still big gaps at the air inlet.

The wings still looked too naked so I took two of the fins from the Raider sprue to make for some decoration. I aligned and cut them a little bit so that they fit smoothly.

Greenstuff time. It took a little effort to clean things up.

And I didn't suceeed a 100%. It would have been better to mix in some miliput because that can be sanded.

Small detail: The Eldar pilot head is replaced by a Dark Eldar baldy.

Disintegrator cannons are glued to the gun mounts and I prepared a flyer base. Now you can guess the dimensions already.

The missiles: Why bother modeling and attachig them when you can simply represent them in their housing? It is one Typhoon launcher cut down boldly. WYSIWYG at it's best.

This is were they go...

A little more to the rear. Notice the Splintercannon gun mount in the air intake. I later threw this idea over board in favour of a more spikey look.

Put the round antenna-egg things on the top of the wings to bring in some Eldar feeling and added a small fin to the rear/side of the cockpit.

Not a lot to shoot at when it comes as you.

Put some bits on the wings and greenstuffed the seems to the cockpit. Fireprism spikes as fins and the weapon mount for the Splintercannon/rifle made form the Webber.

Almost done...

...and that's it- Splinterrifles mounted. Time for a Nespresso- George?

This is what he looks like for the side- I love the look of the weapons array. Reminds me of Babylon 5 antenna arrays.

Vehicle Destroyed – Explodes (Crater)

Since I play almost entirely tournaments I feel the need to bring my own craters with me. Reason is the vehicle damage table. I thought about it some time now and came to a decission of what I wanted to have.

It all comes down to the following rule taken from the 5th Edition 40k rulebook:

Destroyed – Explodes
The vehicle is destroyed, as its fuel and ammo detonate, ripping it apart in a spectacular explosion. Flaming debris is scattered D6" from the vehicle, and models in range suffer a Strength 3, AP– hit. The vehicle is then removed and is replaced with an area of difficult ground representing scattered wreckage or a crater (if you have one).

So the tank fflew away and is to be replaced by difficult ground (and not exaclty a crater.) This is important since putting doen your models in a crater is always difficlt (I think because of the strange real liffe efect called "gravity"). So my approach is to keep it simple and this is how I did it.

This is my approach:

You need styrene, PVA glue, water, toilet paper, sand and paint

Measure your tanks and draw the outines of your terrain on the styrene. Afterwards carve in the PVA with a hobby knife. This is important, so you can break it easily later on.

Take some PVA

Mix it with water

roll out your toilet paper

and apply the watered down PVA to it

Looks like this when you are half- way through

Add more paper

and cut off at the border

All covered

And glued to the styrene.

Take some sand- I have a mix of different grains form the beach and other locations ready in a glass.

Aplly carefully - not too thick so it can soak up the PVA/water

Let it dry for a day and then break it apart at the earlier carved lines.

Here are my paints. I primed it with gesso(white with added grey since I had no black gesso around) which I deluted with water 50/50 again.

Looks like this.

As you can see it is quite wet so again let it dry for a day.

Here you can see some of my more elaborate versions (the ones for the Landraiders) Since I have more place for putting down the models, I decided to allow for some wreckage on the base.

Last step is a drybrush with another color and maybe seal it with some varnish- and you are ready to go. Have fun. Mabye I will add more pictures later on of them in play- time will tell.

Color scheme for my Dark Eldar

I allready settled my mind on this earlier but recently found this nice army painter picture so I think it is worth a post: I will reproduce the Kabal of the Flayed Skull.

As you can see in the picture there are the dark red tones I love su much again. the black for the underwear is for realism and contrast and I will surely add some highlights in the means of hair, eye sockets and gems. I think of green mainly. Bases are not decided yet but I might just go for dry, yellowish grass.

The Flayed Skull

The Kabal of the Flayed Skull tattoo stylised bloodstreaks across their faces. Their many aircraft and well-equipped warrior cliques boast so many gore-splattered trophies that the entire Kabal has a reputation for being hi-tech headhunters.

And when I am just at it. Yestereday I wrote about picster and his Blood Angels only to find one of his Dark Eldar jetbikes on Games-Workshop website today. If it is true, that he painted that model in five hours like it is said there, I hate him for his talent.

Five hours? you got to be kidding me- man niveua that is something of a goal.

Jawdropping OSL by Raffaele Picca

Sometimes I stumble over pictures that just make me drool. This time it is by one of the talented artists over at Massive Voodoo: Raffaele Picca alias picster

His Blood Angels as on the above picture (taken from his Coolminiornot account) have exactly the style of paintjob which I would want to see on my army. Especially the Object Source Lighting (OSL) from the Plasma gun makes you want to equip every model in your army with one.

On top of that (Picture taken from his blogpost on massivevoodoo) he even has a tutorial up so that a skilled artist may even reproduce his work. Just plain awsome- pay them a visit there are also a lot of other useful tutorials up there.

Truescale Marines

WMS 2010 - 40k Tournament

The Viennese 40k Championships took place this weekend and I attendet with my Angry Marines using Blood Angel rules. My list was as follows:

1x Reclusiarch
2x 5 Man Assault squad with Melta and Meltabomb for the Sergeant in Razorback wit twinlinked flamers
1x 5 Man Assault squad in Land Raider Crusader with Multimelta
1x 15 Man Deathcompany with 9 Bolters, three of them Powerfists and 6 Boltpistols
1x Landspedder with Flamer and Typhoon Launcher
2x Baal Predator with Assault Cannon and Bolter sponsons
2x Predator with Autocannon and Lascannon sponsons

To make it short I placed 4th with two wins and a draw in the last game. I faced three Imperial Guard players and can say that I have now some experience in dealing with Vendettas to say the least.

The results (all top comers are members of Austria`s ETC Team)

GAME 1

My oppent was fielding Imperial Guard and there were tow markers to be conquered. I won the roll to go first and advanced aggreslively since I could not hope to best him at firepower.

Death company and chaplain are ready to embark the LRC in turn 1.

Predator tracking one of the scouting Vendettas qhich tries to escape behind the shape of a destroyed building.

Baals scout ahead to put some preasure on the guard tanks (2 Demolishers, 2 Execuzritoners and 1 Vanilla Leman Russ)

The Cadians identify the Deathcompany to be the major threat and send the Melta Command squad to "bring it down"

Boom goes the Raider and some proper angry marines ready themselves to take the Russ shelling...

...which they survive to start their bloody work. In the rear the assault squas hits enemy lines to conquer the opposing marker.

The other assault suqad downs the Vendetta after it immobilizes their transport.

Deathcompany hits the Leman Russ Demolishers and blasts tank after tank with the Krank Grenades at Initiative 5 before the three fitsts even get to strike.

The Razorback flames the 10 Veterans holding the objective (barrel) and the assault squad goes in to take it. The Baal covers the flank of the death company to give them more time.

The penal legion disembarks the vendetta and (to my great surprise) deals with my assault squad by killing them in close combat.

The end of the games sees me killing off the rest while holding my objective where the Landspeeder is duelling with one Vendetta over the period of 5 turns.

GAME 2

The next Guard army but with far less Russes. Instead they pack Hellhounds and only one Vendetta. It is spearhead deployment and I roll to go first. The objective is Killpoints and again I have to move in to compensate for his bigger firepower.

Predaros getting ready to shoot first and kill the Lemanruss in the opposing corner first turn.The baals will scout followed by the Landraider.

He steals Initiative and the scouting Baals pay the price when one explodes and the other is immobilozed and stunned like 5 times. My Landspeeder starts to shoot at the oncoming Vendetta.

Then he becomes a little over confident and tries to ram my Landraider with a squadron of two hellhounds. My Predaors are therwhile being harrased by a Leman Russ Exterminator who comes in form reserves and hammers their side armor supported by a Primaris Psyker with Chain lighting attacks.

The hellhounds are blown up spectacularly serving as a jump board for my deathcompany who then charge into the jaw of the Guard army.

The other flank which is held by Sniper veterans and a Lemanruss is assaulted by one Razorback and Assault sqad....

..which is stopped dead in it's tracks when the Snipers leave cover, pull out their Krakgrenades and do what their were trained to do.

End of the game sees my Deathcompany being shot below half strength after killing another hellhoudn squadron.

The Assault squad dispatches the Veterans and take cover behind the hill and so the game ends with 8:2 Killpoints.

GAME 3
Imperial Gaurd- but a little different. Rudi is maybe the best gamer Austria has to offer (in my humble oppinion) and I was prepared for a tough match. Mission was 5 markers and dawn of war. This gave me an advantage as I went first and advanced really early planning to rip with my Deathcompany into his tanks asap.

He left everythin in reserves to better react at my deployment and since I was so close he showed me what torrent of fire means.

One Baal explodes, one looses his turret, the Landraider is immobilized and my Preds are stunned. There goes the plan...

Taking everything I have I stick to the plan and advance directly at his ranks.

Vendetta attacks one of "my" markers and drops a special weapon squad with flamers. My assault squads react, kill the Vendetta and force the Special weapon guys to retreat.
They then take the objective. In the rear you can see the Razorback form the next picture.

Challenging a platoon command, loosing their Razorback and entanlging the squad in a bloody melee afterwards. What you cannot see is the satisfied grin in the face of Tank commander "Baal 1" when he is melta vaporized after ram-exploding a Manticore Missile Tank.

The last stand of the Death company when they finally meet their master at the hand of one company suqad. (How many f****g meltas were there?!?!?) Note the chaplain driving them on...

The game ends with each of us holding tow objectives and my army reduced to 11 marines. It's a with 18:22 points against me for getting wooped so badly. Still I am satisfied with the results and the allogether positive experience.

The casting and reparing/modeling is done and I arlready primed the parts. Without further words here are the pics:

Because of bubbles I had to fill a lot of parts including the recreation of the jaws.

Always the same spots which cause problems as you can see.

Since the mould started to dissolve with the eigth model I decided to use the protoype as well.

Here you can see the arms and guns I will use- notice the three fingered claws which turned out rather cool. An accident with the mould originally that turned ito a chance to create soemthing new.

Tyranids evolving into 5th edition: Tervigon [01]

Without a lot of words I show you the progress of the model(s) so far. I am almost finished and will do the paintjob today.

Starting to break down the Carnifexes.

Broken off legs included (ooops)

Tervigons look bigger than Carnifexes so I decided I need Trygon sized bases. I made a mold and two bases of resin.

Turned out perfekt- easy cast.

By accident I stumbeled across the belly I needed when I looked into my bitsbox- just needed another mold- done (you see the mold in the picture upside down).

Number two is a little handi(foot)capped.

The head is based on the Tyranid Warrior- since it's so out of scale for the body the model looks bigger.

"I can walk!" - legs glued into place.

Close-up of the forearms. After all this beast is not meant for close combat and the model shoudl represent this. So tiny little T-Rex talons.

Spot the difference!

The belly is covered on top by a shell form greenstuff- a lot of putty went into this section. Als the big arms were moved into the middle of the model to support it's weight better.

There are the soon to be hatchlings. I couldn't get a convincing feeling for the fully grown Termagant jumping out the Tervimom- too small the model seemed for up to 18 spawned critters per turn.

So I settled on an egg laying machine in the sense of the Alien Queen.

This should have been up a long time ago but real life constraints keep me form posting. Namely I started on my new job this month and I am still in the progress of adpoting. Anyhow here we go.
As you can see below I did the resin pouring for the torsi and already started with greenstuffing the imperfections. The pouring of the arms is quite a pain due to the complicate forms. I am doing it along with a paint job since the curing takes it's time- Right now I am painting Hyrdas (yes, Fabian- your Hydras) and plan to finish them by the mid of the week.

I have reached the point where I consider the modeling done. I had different feedback on the shoulderpads. Some, as jabberjabber found them fitting others disaproved, so after a day of greenstuff-curing and thinking I decided to taske the risk and carve them down.

I do not regret it and believe that it was the right decission, so I will continue with the arms now and prepare the mold for the body in the meantime.

I am preparing the army for 5th edition and I started with Tervigons already. At the same time I have decided to mutate my warriors into Hive guard...

I will only use the lower bodies and create a new torso which will then be cast to get nine models. The weapons will be converted from leftover bits.

I plan on using the old upper bodies to build some more raveners- this seems to be the most cst effective method.

Thunderwolves WIP 01

I thought I show you what I was doing today- mainly pouring resin and modeling with epoxy putty. But for one day the result is nice- This is the beginning of my first unit of Thunderwolves to go with my Angry Marines.

I made took a foto of every model. The brown stuff is greenstuff mixed with miliput terracota (1:1) The base material is Resin. Yes, I know that I still have a lot of bubbles to fix. ^^

And a little groupshot to show how they feel as a group.

edit: This is the Multiple Missille Launcher for my Exorcist conversion. It is made from the Valkyre Missile pods, a havoc launcher with top hatch and some greenstuff. It fits the mainbody rather nicely although I am not 100% satisfied. I am currently assembling the rest of the tank- pictures to follow.

edit: This is my HQ for my new Withhunters army. It represents a human in a battlesuit with jetpack. Rulewise it will be one of the HQ selections of the army with 2+ armour, jumppack, Plasmapistol and Eviscerator. The basemodel is a Tacarm from the game AT-43 the rest is bits and greenstuff. It is not finished yet and has to be placed on a smaller base. I am also thinking of repositioning the model before basing it.

And he's already done. Nitty gritty little bugger- I like him a lot.
As promised, I added some cabling to his wrench. The base is by the way no real base. I just added it so painting is ewasier. I figured that he can still be glued with it to the Stompa- black always blends in.

He will now go and meet his friends on the TeamStompa- Hopefully, I will have some pictures of him at his final destination.

This is a little side project I am doing for my tournemant team which goes by the name of "Becaus We Can!".
The team consists of players who attend torunaments in and around Austria, train for them together and support each other. I only recently joined their team after playing three of my five games at the Austrian Championships against members of them.

I like their apporach and their sense of comunity they are building very much and especially one of their common projects. It's called the "TEAM STOMPA". When the best Teamplayer "Wolfman" of this year's AC won a Stompa as the price, they decided that it should become a mighty symbol of BWC. So it was planned and assembled and placed at the teams's boot camp (Wolfman's gaming room).

To further enhance the teamspirit every member was invited to build and paint a little greenskin representing himself at the AC and when I joined the team I was also asked to do so. I happily complied and today started work.

I based my work on a Gnoblar who was originally part of an Oger box. Isn't he an angry little fella who would just fit nice into my Angry Marines scheme?

He is wearing a Power Monkey Wrench, a standard weapon loadout for the rather closecombat oriented Angry Marines. I am not really sure what he does with all the other "loot" he has there but as for now nobody got the guts to ask him.

I'll add some more cables to add some more of the 41.st century to him and will then give him a propa paintjob.

Blog template reworked

Blog is under construction again. My interests have changed slightly and I wanted to have it load faster and only show the relevant stuff...

What else: I will reduce the labels as well as the widgets. Also flash and java elements will be ditched. I am not sure if lightbox will be dropped as well but tests will show soon.
Concerning the content I decided to let go on the Exodite section- the blog has become more of an allrounder and I wouldn't want to miss this stuff- as I said, things changed.

Tervigon - planning the beast

Since my friend borrowed my 4th Edition Tyranid army for the Carinthian Championships last weekend and placed 2nd overall and I have my ongoing project (almost) finished, I decided that it was time to convert the army to 5th edition.

Starting with the Tervigons. I have five Carnifexes in my army- three of them equipped with (back then) twinlinked devourers. What I already did was rip off the arms so that they could be played in the torunament. What follows will be to bulk them up so that they fit the artwork. I will try to reproduce the image from the codex to a certain degree but will also give them my slight twist.

An inspiration is (as always) mother nature with this gross bug (Abedus):
